An Introduction to Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathic medicine is the practice of medicine that blends natural, non-toxic therapies, known for centuries, with the latest scientific knowledge of health and human systems. It covers all aspects of human health from prenatal to geriatric care, from nutrition to lifestyle, from the physical to the mental.

Naturopathic medicine concentrates on whole-patient wellness by attempting to find the underlying cause of the patient’s condition rather than emphasizing only symptomatic treatment. For example, nasal congestion might be caused by a food allergy or environmental factors. Naturopathic medicine also uses the lowest possible force intervention necessary to achieving a cure.

A naturopathic physician, an ND, is a primary care general practitioner trained as an expert in natural medicine. A naturopathic physician focuses diagnosis and treatment on the causal factors, such as the food allergies. An ND tailors the medicine specifically to the individual patient and emphasizes prevention and self-care for a true cure. Naturopathic physicians also cooperate with all other branches of medical science and, when appropriate, refer patients to other practitioners for diagnosis or treatment.
